Top Cycling Destinations for your Favourite Activity
Planning a cycling holiday can be difficult – with so much choice how will you ever pick? To help anyone planning a trip with their bike, we’ve grouped our top destinations based on our favourite cycling activities, to help get you inspired.
Mountain Biking
Europe: France
Considered one of the best playgrounds for mountain bikers in the World, the Alps offers an amazing array of rides and all in breath taking settings. Morzine is a particular highlight, with plenty of mountain trails, bike friendly accommodation and lots of chairlifts – so you can focus on the downhill descents rather than uphill pedalling.
World Wide: Colorado, USA
The Colorado Trail boasts a single track, up to 5,000 feet elevations and 535 miles of forest, hills and amazing views. There are certain areas where bikes are not permitted, so you’ll need to avoid the six designated wilderness areas, but you’ll be spoilt for choice when you discover the bounty of day trip routes and connecting trails available.
Cycle Touring
Europe: Germany
France is usually the go to cycle touring destination for Europe, but Germany is a fantastic alternative. Cycle along German rivers, explore stunning castles and beautiful scenery. Due to its great location, you could even book a cycle tour encompassing The Netherlands or the Czech Republic.
World Wide: South Africa
Not the usual cycle destination, South Africa’s Western Cape has a wealth of attractions for cyclists – great weather, fantastic vineyards, Cape Town, Cable Mountain, the penguins of Boulders Beach and whale watching. With so much to see and do, just make sure you don’t spend too much time sampling the local wine.
Triathlon & Ironman
Europe: London
The biggest triathlon in the world (in terms of participants) is closer than you think, and takes place every summer in the UK’s capital. There are five levels to choose from, ranging from ‘Super Sprint’ (400m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km sprint), right up to ‘Olympic Plus’ (1,500M swim, 80km cycle and 10km run). If you’re feeling really brave, you could opt for the ‘Weekend Warier’ where you basically try to complete as many triathlons as you can over two days!
World Wide: Hawaii
If you’re looking for a real challenge in a stunning location, then the Hawaii Ironman is the next training goal for you. First you’ll complete a 2.4 mile ocean swim, before riding 112 miles on your bike, and finally running a full marathon across Hawaii’s Big Island’s lava fields. This competition takes place in October each year.
Top Tip
Whatever activity your planning, be it a cultural cycle tour, an adrenaline pumping mountain biking adventure, or a test of your physical and mental endurance, you must ensure you have the right travel insurance policy. Without the right cover, you could be vulnerable to expensive bills if something goes wrong, so always double check that your destination, equipment and activity are covered when researching cover.
